ABOUT SANGEH MONKEY FOREST

General Information

Sangeh Monkey Forest, located near the village of Sangeh, is a pristine haven that spans over 6 hectares. This natural sanctuary is not only renowned for its vibrant biodiversity but also for the playful long-tail monkeys that call it home.

The History of This Forest

In the 17th century, during the Monarchic golden era of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Ketut Karangasem, the son of I Gusti Agung Made Agung, embarked on constructing a temple within the heart of a nutmeg forest. This sacred site, later named Bukit Sari Temple by the locals, became synonymous with a small forest characterized by a rich blend of vegetation covering approximately 10.8 hectares.

Interestingly, the myths surrounding Sangeh Forest are intricately connected to a historical event. The story was about the wood evacuation from Agung Mount in Karangasem to Mengwi District. Witnesses to this evacuation process played a pivotal role in shaping the forest’s identity. Over time, the area evolved into the lush and vibrant expanse known today as Sangeh Monkey Forest.

In contemporary times, the local community recognizes this site as the culturally significant Sangeh Monkey Forest. Functioning as a formal tourism garden and a revered temple area for worship, this Nutmeg Forest holds a special place in the hearts of the people from Sangeh Countryside and its surrounding areas.
